Film of the Month/July 2018 - One Last Dance

Patrick Swayze is, of course, intrinsically linked to 'Dirty Dancing', one of the most beloved and iconic dance films of all time.

Originally a low-budget production it went on to become a worldwide box office hit and was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video.

'One Last Dance' is a very different tale, described in the press release as 'the story of three former dancers given one last chance to discover a dream they lost, and face their demons to dance again'.

It is based on a stage play 'Without a Word' conceived and performed by Lisa Niemi and Patrick Swayze at the Beverly Hills Playhouse in 1984 that explored the emotional impact of leaving their professional ballet careers.

Niemi had been keen to adapt the project into a screenplay and the film was released in 2003.

The narrative revolves around a fictitious New York dance company who find themselves in creative and financial peril after the sudden death of their artistic director; a gala performance is planned with the idea of reuniting the original cast for the world premiere of an unseen and abandoned work.

Alongside Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi, George De La Peña (former soloist with ABT) also stars.

The film is available on DVD and in digital format from Amazon and iTunes (US).
