About

As a former Wardrobe Mistress in the Theatre, this image really speaks to me.

This photo, taken for Life Magazine in 1970, is a costume fitting for the New York City Ballet production of 'Firebird'; pictured (left to right) George Balanchine/Mr B (Choreographer) Madame Karinska (Costume Designer), Gelsey Kirkland (Principal Dancer) and (I'm presuming) the Wardrobe Mistress.

Kirkland (by her own admission in her autobiography 'Dancing on my Grave) was not a fan of this production or costume, she found them both rather cumbersome. I can imagine it would have been possible to cut the air with a knife during this fitting (the look on Kirkland's face says it all) and I know, from personal experience, that the Wardrobe Mistress would have deployed diplomatic skills that would have been the envy of many a UN ambassador!
